Cactuar Mania

Cactuar Mania is a Java-based game inspired by the mini-game "Beetle Mania" from Super Mario RPG and features the cast as well as image & sound resources from Final Fantasy 6 (FF6). In Beetle Mania, players control a beetle avatar to shoot red stars at falling turtle shells while at the same time avoiding being hit by the shells.

I programmed Cactuar Mania to follow this formula while boasting additional features. These extras include a "Support Call System," which assists players with their enemy felled count by calling upon FF6 Allies to join the screen and stampede foes; and a "Boss System," which introduces a Boss entity to the screen, complete with HP and graphical feedback on damage dealt by the player.

For my boyfriend's birthday present, I decided to make a Beetle Mania clone and substitute the beetle and shells with references to Ricky's favorite game Final Fantasy 3/6 (FF6).

Here, the Support Call System has been activated and the Figaro Soldiers charge through the cactuar on their Chocobo mounts. By random chance, other allies from FF6 may join the fray.

The Boss System introduces Gigantuar after players fell 10,000 cactuar. Unlike cactuar who explode upon being hit, this boss has HP that must be wittled away in order to destroy him.

Just to be sure he uncovered all the Easter Eggs, I included some developer notes and post portem files in the present. In the end, the game gift was a huge success - Ricky enjoyed it immensely!
